I had the same problem with an 850, but only one or two lines were missing. I took it apart and saw that there was a 'heat seal' ribbon connecting the PCB with the LCD. I bought a 'junk' 850 with most of the lines missing on the display for a cheap price to see if I could fix it. When I got it I tried re-heating the connector at both ends, which did change things but didn't fix the problem. I then noticed that the carbon tracks connecting the ribbon had broken. Using carbon paint I tried to fix them, but it didn't work as the ribbon has a large bend in it.
I then designed and ordered some flex PCBs with the same number of tracks and the same size as the heat seal ribbon. My idea was to use this tape:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1656
which is conductive only in the Z direction to connect the flex PCB to the LCD and the PCB, and get a fix that way.
I pulled the heat seal ribbon off the PCB and LCD.
The flex PCB is tricky to line up with the PCB pads, and at the LCD end it is almost impossible to see the pads. There were a couple of problems with the flex PCB fix:
1) The Z axis tape seems to have too coarse a size for the conductive 'cells' for it to be able to insulate adjacent pads.
2) The flex PCB was too stiff for the bends I had to make in it and kept pulling the tape off the PCB and LCD.
Although I did manage to get a few lines of pixels appearing, it was not a success.
I have managed to fix one or two other calculator models that didn't have the broken carbon tracks by using my soldering iron station hot air gun. That is temperature controlled and so I can set it to 125 or so and heat the ribbon end up, then use a smooth metal tool to press down on the ends of the ribbon and squish the conductive glue onto the PCB (or LCD). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
