Sinclair Computer Keyboard Membranes

Message par RWAP »

We have just obtained a new batch of replacement keyboard membranes for the following Sinclair computers:

- Sinclair ZX80
- Sinclair ZX81
- Sinclair ZX Spectrum (rubber key model)
- Sinclair ZX Spectrum + / ZX Spectrum +128 models
- Sinclair QL

Hopefully these will serve the market for the next year or so - the ZX80 and ZX81 membranes are certainly an unusual item with their built in touch keyboard. However, I was surprised that the ZX80 is a completely different technology.

With the Sinclair ZX80, the switches are built into the motherboard - there are two trails of solder in a spiral for each key. When you touch the keyboard top, you press down a foil layer which then completes the circuit between the two trails of solder.

A neat solution, but I wonder why the technology was so dramatically altered for the ZX81, where the electrical switches are built into the keyboard membrane itself.
