Re: [PockEmul] le Casio FP-200

remy a écrit : 11 oct.

Re: Casio FX-9000P

email sent to Takeda.

And now there is something *new* in the Casio FX-9000P field !
I know Papalapa will be extremely happy :D

It is a manual he has ben searching for over two years now.
I knew I had it *somewhere* !

sooooo.... tadaaa !

Image

That's 180 dense pages of FX-9000P CA-BASIC goodness :geek:

I have also found the english manual alongside the Reference Manual.
There is only a french / german version floating around (printed in light blue, ew)
This one is way more legible, as it is printed in black. Good.

[EDIT] I now remember that Ledudu had already scanned the English Operation Manual !

Re: Casio FX-9000P

As far I know, it was only for ROM extension. The ROM n command accept the value n from 0 to 199.
Thanks Pocket, that makes totally sense. I see a pattern here :ugeek:
I wouldn't be surprised if Casio had planned a form of solid state program library
Which they ended up doing on the FX-850P and FX-880P.
And as they did in a form / way with the Extended Basic cartridge for the FX-9000P...

But given the frantic output pace to churn out new models with the fierce competition Casio undoubtedly lacked time to do further development.
The 4-bit (but dual CPU!) FX-702P, as quirky as it is, laid the ground for its way more successful sibling, the PB-100 and its successors.
Has the 702P ROM been dumped?
 That is a question for Remy (I don't have the answer)
I don't think it would be possible or safe to dump the ROM using an IC clip.
Thanks for clarifying, it is exactly that - but not knowing how to go further, I refrained from doing so.
The circuit that is driving the address lines, for instance would have to be forced to voltage level and that could damage it. I had a look at the circuit to see how to dump the ROMs and unfortunately there's no BUSREQ signal going out to a connector (although it could come off the Z80 itself). The Z80 bus could then be 'grabbed' and the ROM dumped. I think a better way to grab the ROM contents would be to pull the Z80 out of it's socket and build a 'thing'that replaces the Z80, drives the address' bus and captures the data bus for the whole 64K memory address range. That should give you the contents of the ROMs,
I think you have a much more clear idea than my knowledge level allows me to understand :D
Sounds feasible, though.

Speaking of which, my guess is that there is at least ONE person that has dumped the FX-9000P's ROM.
But he is notoriously secretive of his work, never replies to any e-mail, and only speaks japanese.

I am talking about Toshiya Takeda, maybe you have heard from him.
He has started working since April 2022 on an FX-9000P Emulator, here are the first two screenshots :

Image Image

The guy is talented, but quite slow.
It has taken him 7 years (not a typo) to create, refine and perfect his Casio FP-1100 Emulator!

He is also interesting by using unorthodox methods.
He used a webcam to extract the FP-1100's ROM using the sub-CPU to display and decode a pattern of dots :

Image

But I digress :D

Ah, so the OP-2 does exist. If it has it's own ROM, though, that could be a problem. It would be tricky to get that interface working as the OP-2 does.
Oh yes, very much so. But finding one is a real challenge.
i have an FP200 disk drive unit, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work
Same here, my unit used to work for years and one day it started blowing fuses repeatedly.
I have been unable to diagnose the cause - which is a shame, because I have lots of programs in that proprietary disk format.

The FX-9000P was mainly used for sales / accounting in countries like Chile and Angola.
It did have a career in NZ as well, for the same purposes, and using freelance programmers for private companies.
Those programs are unfortunately lost with the computers.

As far as I know there were never off-the-shelf software sold for it, at least in western countries.
I did manage to snag a book in japanese, but for accounting tasks, not very sexy.

Re: Casio FX-9000P

Memory cartridges should be straightforward, and given modern memory ICs, any size is possible. Maybe even a large cartridge with switchable banks of RAM or flash. The cartridge could be hardware like the original, or you could use a RP Pico to emulate the memory. This allows you to use RAM on the Pico (250K+) and flash space (2Mb) to load different ROM images. The Pico can emulate ROMs and RAMs at the speeds of the FX9000p, see here for a ROM emulator I made:
That hardware should be able to emulate RAM as well as ROM, so could be put onto a cartridge PCB.
VERY interesting, thanks for sharing !
I was wondering : where does your interest in tinkering with these ancient models stem from ?
They are not exactly the most popular models around.
And although the FX-50xP/60xP/702P can be found easily, the 9000P is another story altogether.

There exists a 12Kb Extended Basic ROM Cartridge for he FX-9000P (called E-BASIC) with mostly matrix computation routines.
Unfortunately I do not have it anymore.
There's an FX-502P style interface on the OP-1 which could maybe work with a gadget I made to attach to the FX0502P:
It's funny in a way how large the prototype contraption is, although shorter, but wider than the 502P underneath :)

Regarding the FX-702P ! yes it does have a trap besides the battery compartment.
It is unknown if it was for a RAM or ROM extension - could be both.
Domeone did find ROMn (0, 1 etc) keywords in the FX-702P's BASIC ROM.

Back to the FX-9000P : the op-1 does have a connector for a mini printer : the FP-10, which is the same as the FX-702P's.
And the brochures of the time list it as being connectable to the FX-9000P.

Regarding the FX-9000P's ROM : it has not been extracted as far as I know.
I did buy the thingy to plug onto the ROM without needing to desolder it from the main PCB.
But did not go further, not knowing / making the choice of an EPROM reader.

The memory stucture is interesting. As everybody knows, Casio became famous with their 10 program zones early on.
The RAM cartridges contain these 10 memory zones, serving as storage for 10 programs.
So when you swap a battery backed up RAM cartridge with another one, you obtain 10 brand new program zones.
And there is a fairly sophisticated file handling instructions in the CA-Basic :
(RFILE, RCLEAR, RLIST, RSAVE, RLOAD, ROPEN, RCLOSE, RUT, RGET) so you can pipe programs AND data in and out to/from the cartridges.

Regarding the OP-2 : yes creating some form of replacement would be best.
Moreover as it was not only a dual disk drive unit, but provided an enclosed RS-232C interface as well.
Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to come by. I have ever only seen it once.

And no, you will not find the OP-2 nor even the OP-1 instructions in the FX-9000P's ROM.
The reason is fairly simple :
As a matter of fact, Casio did a clever trick with the Peripherals of its early desktop computer lines :
Each peripheral has its own ROM that loads accordingly into the computers address space.

That allowed them to create peripherals down the line that were not planned at launch.
One typical example are the FP-1100's 8-inch floppy disk drives.
They carry their own ROM and add specific keywords that become available when and if the main unit is switched on after the disk unit is.

Same thing for the FP-200's disk drive unit.
Connecting it into the FP-1100 adds the "FDD0:" peripheral name in addition of the "0:" and "1:" names for the dual FDD unit.

That's it for now, enough rambling ;)

Re: Casio FX-9000P

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your reply.
What hardware extensions do you have in mind ?
It would be interesting to know :geek:
Absolutely agreed on Piotr's website value - priceless

Talking about extensions, did you ever wonder to find out how to create a RAM or ROM card for the FX-702P ?
Talk about an itch ! It has been one of mines since I bought it 40 yrs ago ! Aaaaand I am not the only one on this forum !

If I remember well, Papalapa did give a try to create a RAM cartridge for the FX-9000P since he had none.
But now that he has found one, I don't know how far he went - hopefully he will let us know.
btw, you have PM.

Re: Casio FX-9000P

Hello Andrew,

Thank you ! for filling out your presentation - pretty informative and interesting I must say !
I had a peek over on your YT videos, liked the content and the tone so... subscribed :)

Your FX-702P display hack is amazing btw 8O

Regarding finding a working FX-9000P can be tricky...or quite expensive.
Incidentally, there was one auctioned last week on ebay (currently listed as out of stock), albeit with an over-the-top BIN price :

Are you looking for a working unit ? Or as a repair / restoration project ?

Nice to see a FX-9000P user !
Can you tell us the story of yours ?
What configuration ?
Where are you located ?

Also it is a tradition on the forum to present oneself on this part of the forum : viewforum.php?f=49

Thanks and welcome !
